Check the spelling you want

Keep the fada in your spelling and check it in the engraving preview.

An accented letter is part of the wording you choose. If you want Áine rather than Aine, enter the accented spelling from the start. The DogTag.ie builder accepts Irish accented letters, apostrophes and hyphens; the complete wording still needs to pass the selected tag's font and fit checks.

Enter the exact letter

Use the intended accented spelling, then compare the input with the preview.

Check punctuation too

Look at the apostrophe, hyphen and spacing rather than reading the name from memory.

Resolve a message first

If copied text is rejected, try retyping the accented letter and check the message again.

1. Enter the spelling you actually want engraved

Type the name into the intended engraving line, including each fada. Use your keyboard's accented-letter option if needed. Changing capitalisation is also a design choice: compare CÚ with Cú rather than assuming the builder will change the case for you.

  • Fictional practice examples: Áine, Róisín and CÚ.
  • Check the input itself first, then read the preview letter by letter.
  • These examples demonstrate spelling checks; choose the full identification and contact wording separately.

2. Check apostrophes, hyphens and spaces deliberately

The builder accepts both straight and curly apostrophes, as well as the ordinary hyphen. They can look different in a chosen font. Enter the punctuation you intend to use, then check that it is visible and in the right place. A space on either side of a hyphen also changes the wording and the room it needs.

  • Compare the fictional examples O'Rí and O’Rí to see the two apostrophe styles.
  • Use Rí-Rua as a practice example for a hyphenated name.
  • Remove accidental leading, trailing or repeated spaces while checking the input.

3. If a pasted accented name is rejected

Copied text can look right but still trigger a character message. Delete the affected accented letter and type it again using your keyboard's accented-letter option. Retype the full short name if you cannot identify the character causing the problem, then check the message and preview again.

  • Keep the intended accent when retyping; removing the fada changes the spelling.
  • A character message and a line that will not fit are different problems: retyping a letter does not create more engraving room.
  • If the message remains or the preview does not show the intended spelling, contact us before ordering.

4. Compare the lettering with the complete line

Keep the spelling unchanged while comparing fonts. Look specifically at the accent above the letter and the shape of any punctuation. Then check the whole line with the chosen tag. A short practice name fitting in one design does not mean every longer name or additional detail will fit.

5. Check names on each selected side

If you add back engraving, review that side too. Check an owner's name just as carefully as any name on the front: spelling, accent, apostrophe, spaces and line fit. After changing the font, return to both previews because the same font choice applies to both sides.

6. Finish with your actual order wording

Replace every practice name or placeholder before ordering. Recheck the complete design, including contact details, with your final font and tag selected. Resolve the builder's messages and compare the text you entered with the preview before continuing.

Quick answers

Good to know before you order.

Can I put an Irish name with a fada on a DogTag.ie tag?

The builder accepts Irish accented letters such as á, é, í, ó and ú. Enter the intended spelling and check it in your chosen font and tag preview. The complete line must still pass the builder's checks before you continue.

Can I use an apostrophe or hyphen in the engraving?

Yes. Straight and curly apostrophes and the ordinary hyphen are accepted. Check their appearance and position with your actual wording in the selected font.

Why is a copied name with a fada being rejected?

Some copied accented text can trigger the character check even when it looks correct. Delete and retype the accented letter with your keyboard's accented-letter option, then check again. If the problem remains, contact us before ordering.

Should I remove the fada to make a long name fit?

Keep the spelling you intend to order. Compare another font or tag size and review other non-essential wording if there is a fit message. If you cannot get the intended name to fit, ask for help before ordering.
