Choose your engraving font

Compare the same wording in two fonts before you choose your engraving.

A font can look appealing in a short sample name and feel quite different with your own wording. Start with the details you need, keep the tag shape and text unchanged while comparing styles, then check the complete preview before ordering.

Use your own wording

Compare fonts with the same name, message or contact line rather than judging only the font-menu label.

Check the whole line

Look at the spacing and every character, then check the builder's fit messages for the selected tag.

Review both sides

If you add reverse engraving, recheck that wording after changing the font too.

1. Enter the wording before comparing fonts

Choose the tag shape and size you want to compare, then enter the intended engraving in the builder. Open Choose font in the Add their details section. Leave the wording unchanged while trying another font so that you are comparing the lettering rather than two different designs.

  • Use fictional placeholders such as PET NAME and 08X XXX XXXX while exploring a design.
  • Before ordering, replace every placeholder with the details you actually want engraved.
  • Check every character in the preview, including spaces and any punctuation you entered.

2. Compare the styles available in the builder

The current font menu includes condensed, bold, rounded, stencil, serif and handwritten styles. The names below match the builder's options. Use them as a starting point for comparison, rather than treating one style as a promise of better results for every tag and every line.

  • Condensed styles: Anton Condensed and Barlow Condensed Black.
  • Bold sans-serif styles: Poppins Bold, Atkinson Bold and Archivo Black.
  • Rounded styles: Coiny Rounded, Lilita One and Changa One.
  • Other styles to compare: Saira Stencil, Bree Serif and Kalam Bold.

3. Compare the contact line as well as the name

The longest line may be the contact detail rather than the name. Check it separately in each font: can you distinguish the digits and spaces without guessing? Then look back at the whole tag. A style you like for a short name still needs to work with the other information you have chosen.

  • Read the contact line character by character instead of recognising it from memory.
  • Check repeated digits and groups of numbers carefully.
  • Compare the actual spelling and capitalisation you intend to order.

4. Treat the fit message as part of the choice

Different lettering can take up different amounts of space. The builder checks the selected font with the actual text and tag, so a character count alone is not a reliable way to choose a style. If a line does not fit, follow the message, shorten non-essential wording or compare another font before continuing.

  • Try a condensed option with the same wording and compare the result.
  • If the line is still too long, remove unnecessary words rather than repeatedly adding more text.
  • Compare a larger tag when the information needs more room.

5. Recheck the back after a font change

When reverse engraving is enabled, review that side as well as the front. A short front line and a longer reverse line can respond differently to a font change. Check that the wording still belongs on the intended side and that neither face has become crowded.

6. Make the final choice with the complete design

Once you have a favourite, return to the full preview with the chosen shape, size, colour and wording. Check spelling again and resolve any fit messages before ordering. The useful choice is a font you like with the details you actually need, rather than the most decorative sample in the menu.

Quick answers

Good to know before you order.

What is the best font for a dog tag?

There is no single font choice for every wording and tag. Compare the same text in the available styles, check that each character is clear to you and use the builder's fit messages before deciding.

Which fonts can I compare at DogTag.ie?

The current menu includes Anton Condensed, Poppins Bold, Coiny Rounded, Saira Stencil, Bree Serif, Kalam Bold, Atkinson Bold, Archivo Black, Lilita One, Barlow Condensed Black and Changa One.

Can changing the font affect whether my text fits?

Yes. Fonts use different letter shapes and widths. Keep the wording unchanged when comparing styles, then recheck the preview and fit messages for the selected tag.

Should I choose the font before entering the phone number?

Make the final font choice with the complete wording entered, including any contact line and optional reverse details. A style that suits a short sample name may need another look with the full design.
